Mary Frances (Warfield) Beeson was born on December 14, 1848 in Jacksonville (Macoupin County), Illinois to James Lot Warfield and Mary Jane (Jones) Warfield. The Warfield family moved to Johnson County, Kansas, on the Kansas and Missouri border, where they became residents of Shawneetown in 1861. William Clarke Quantrill was born in Canal Dover, Ohio in 1837. He came to Kansas as a young man, and taught school for a while before he became active in the border wars, between free state and pro-slavery forces in the fight for Kansas statehood. He fought on the Confederate side during the Civil War, participating in guerrilla warfare.
